DVD Players
A DVD player can play standard CDs as well as newer types of audio discs called DVD audio and SA-CD which have better sound quality. A DVD, besides storing the audio and video data, can also store other types of data. Its different formats are known as DVD- Video, DVD-Audio and DVD-Rom. It looks like an ordinary CD and is about 12.cm in diameter.
Some DVD players can also play MP3 files or those containing JPEG picture files which you can display on TV screens.
DVD players have provision for bookmarking also. You can mark down your favorite scenes or songs in a disc so you can find them quickly whenever you like. More advanced DVD players can allow you to bookmark many discs and remember your bookmarks even when the disc has been removed.
The ‘resume’ button allows you to relocate the place on the disc where you stopped it when you shut down your player. You do not have to start the disc all over again from the beginning each time you want to start it from a particular point. This can be done even after you have removed the disc and reinserted it.
A DVD player is also equipped with auto power-off feature. If you leave your player switched on and go away, this feature will switch the player into a stand by position after a certain period of idleness. This can save your energy bill.
A DVD player is generally equipped with a high definition video socket called HDMI output socket to enhance the standard DVD pictures when the machine is plugged into a HD ready TV.
DVD players can also be attached with the external surround sound decoders such as Dolby Digital 5.1, amplifiers and speakers. This plug in can deliver a cinema like surround sound experience. Practically all the DVD players are equipped with the surround sound tracks on them. Some players even have a built-in Dolby Digital surround sound decoder. In that case, you have to attach additional sound amplifiers and speakers to get a home cinema entertainment. This has a distinct advantage over using an external decoder.
If you want to play the discs from any part of the world, you need to buy a multi-region player. For this you need to have a TV with a Scart input to connect a DVD player.
