DVD Basics
It is always a good idea to buy a DVD player online as the market available there is vast and the prices are competitive. Besides, you can choose from a large variety of options which may not be available in your local market or local big box stores.
The first important feature that you should consider about a DVD player is the quality of the picture. When all DVDs claim to be digital, it becomes difficult to differentiate the picture quality displayed by them.
This issue can be resolved by the choice of your system—whether you are connecting your new DVD player with just a TV or a complete home theater. In case you connect it with your TV, you have to take into account the size of its screen. In case of home theater you have to consider how elaborate its system is.
For the best possible decision, it must also be noted that while all the data on the DVD video discs may be digital, the video output offered by a DVD player depends upon its video digital –to-analogue conversion, decoding and video processing features. It is in this area that the differences arise among the DVD players. The best way to sort out this problem is to watch the picture quality of a DVD player on a larger TV screen, preferably 36 inch or still larger screen. In case, however, you do not have a TV with a large screen, or, if the screen size is 27 inches or even less and you do not have a home theater as well, then any budget model DVD player will offer a good enough picture. For laymen consumers it is difficult to differentiate between the picture qualities of two different DVD players on smaller screen TVs. The same applies to the sound quality if the sound is produced only by the speakers on the TV.
Certain other features to be checked are the special effects of the DVD player such as pause, fast scan, slow motion and frame-by-frame features. The DVD player should allow you to pause playback with a crystal clear picture. It should also have the forward and reverse scan facility with multiple speeds. This allows you to quickly search for a specific song or a scene. There should also be slow motion effects frame by frame in both the forward and reverse directions.
