Soundproofing
Soundproofing your home, or even particular rooms in your house improve your quality of life by protecting you from the 24X7 onslaught of unwanted noise that you are otherwise subjected to. Music, plumbing and machine noises can be easily silenced by soundproofing your home.
The best time for soundproofing your home or any room in your house is when it being constructed. Soundproofing done along with initial construction is cheaper to install and more effective than soundproofing already existing structures. In order to make your new construction soundproof, install drywall on one side of the stud walls, since you still have access to the interior of the walls. Get soundproofing insulation like foam or paper fiber insulation blown in. This will stick to the construction and provide superior insulation and soundproofing. Alternatively, you can get the wall packed with fiberglass insulation batts. Make sure that the fiberglass is tightly packed in order to stop maximum sound. Once the insulating material is in place, hang the drywall as usual and your soundproof wall is ready.
You can also install soundproof wall panels or rolls that are available off the shelf at home improvement stores, drywall supply houses or even lumberyards. They come with easy installing instructions and you can soundproof your walls using these before hanging the drywall. Before you start soundproofing your room, make sure that all the plumbing and electrical connections are in place and wear proper protective gear like a mask and goggles when installing insulation yourself.
In case you want to soundproof already existing walls, you will first have to remove the drywall on one side and then fill in insulation as mentioned above. Alternatively, you can just cut out small holes in your drywall and get insulation blown in .Once the insulation is in place, you can plug in the holes. In case you don’t want to play with your wall structures, you can just get them covered with soundproofing panels and rolls. This is however, a much costlier option than getting your insulation filled in between the drywalls. You can use the same sound deadening material for soundproofing your ceiling. You can stick soundproof panels or matting to your ceiling in order to soundproof it. A suspended tile ceiling can also be installed in order to get a soundproof ceiling. Sound deadening mats should also be applied on the floor above the ceiling that you want soundproofed in order to further cut down on noise levels. You can also go for bamboo or cork flooring.
You can soundproof the doors and windows of your rooms by cutting out window sized soundproof panels out of readymade soundproof materials and using it as a plug over your windows. You can also soundproof your windows by using sound deadening drapes. These are much more convenient than other options to soundproof doors.
You can use the same methods for building a soundproof vocal booth or any soundproof box that you want to create given some soundproofing specifications.
