Satellite Televisions

Satellite TV is telecast from the communications satellite as against the conventional terrestrial television and cable television. The program signals are directed from the earth to a satellite which is fitted with a transmission antenna with an uplink facility. These are very large uplink satellite dishes with 30 to 40 feet in diameter. The larger the diameter, the more accurate is the aiming and the signal strength at the satellite. The uplinked signals are relayed at a certain frequency range and are received by the transponder, located on the satellite, tuned to that frequency range.

The transponder, in turn, retransmits the signals back to the earth. These signals are, however, released at a different frequency band—typically in the C-band and/ Ku-band. This is done to avoid any interference with the uplink signals. This process of sending the signals from the satellite to the earth station is called downlink.
